What affects freelance translators’ availability?
Project managers spend considerable time on securing translators for projects. At the same time, translators experience peaks and lows. Applications exist where you can register your availability, but in the first place, why does this gap exist? Are there any patterns that relate to any demographic, psychological or work-related information on translators – such as years spent translating, unit price, social media or community presence, whether translation is one activity or the only activity, whether the translator works for LSPs or for final customers, preferred number of customers, family status including children, country or nationality, whether the translator lives in a big city or the countryside, whether the translator considers herself to be an introvert/extrovert, etc.?
This presentation probably won’t be able to give conclusive answers, but will spark a debate on a topic that is not much discussed, yet very much impacting our daily work.
